EUROPA CONFERENCE LEAGUE: West Ham advance as fan violence ruins the night
May 19, 2023

West Ham qualifed for the final of the Europa Conference League as they beat Dutch side AZ Alkmaar 1-0 on the night and 3-1 on aggregate, but it was violent scenes in the stands after the game that were the main talking point of the night.
Substitute Pablo Fornals scored the game’s only goal deep into referees added time to ensure The Hammers advance to the final where they will face Italian side Fiorentina on the 7th of June.
After the game however West Ham players became embroiled in ugly scenes in the stands as the home fans appeared to attack a section of the crowd where the family and friends of Hammers players were sitting.
Speaking after the game West Ham boss David Moyes commented: “What I don’t want to do in any way is blight our night. It wasn’t West Ham supporters looking for trouble.
“Was I worried? Yeah, my family were there and I had friends in that section. You’re hoping they would try to get themselves away from it.
“Security wanted to take me inside, but I had to make sure my players weren’t involved.”
West Ham stars Said Benrahma and Michail Antonio were reportedly among the players who waded into the crowd in an attempt to intervene.
Moyes added: “We’ll need to wait for the dust to settle to see what it is but the biggest problem is that is the area where the players have all their families in,” he said.
“That is where the problem came, and a lot of players were getting angry because they couldn’t get to see if they were OK.
“We’ll have to wait and ask the officials what really happened. I can only tell you that players were involved because that was the family area.”
Meanwhile AZ Alkmaar boss Pascal Jansen said: “I feel a little bit ashamed it happened in our stadium but you have to control your emotions.”
