Lyle Foster sees red as Burnley grab a first point of the season

September 19, 2023

It was an eventful night for South African striker Lyle Foster who ended an action-packed night at the City Ground with a red card as Burnley drew 1-1 with Nottingham Forest.

But it wasn’t all bad for the South African who provided the assist for The Clarets’ opener and had a goal of his own disallowed by VAR.

It was a close call that saw Foster’s goal denied after Sander Berge was deemed to have handled the ball in the build-up to the goal.

If Foster had scored, he would have become the third South African, after Benni McCarthy and Steven Pienaar to have scored in three consecutive Premier League games. Now, instead, he will miss three games due to the card that was issued – again after VAR intervention – for elbowing a defender.

Despite the way things ended for Foster, it was still a good night for his team as they collected their first point of the season.

The goals that were scored came from Zeki Amdouni, who opened the scoring in the 41st minute. Foster was able to claim the assist. The equalizer came in the 61st minute from Forest debutant Callum Hudson-Odoi. It was a cracker of a strike that was curled, on the angle, into the top corner of the goal.

Speaking after the game Burnley boss Vincent Kompany told Sky Sports: “We still have so much more room to progress. At least we defended the box today and we didn’t capitulate.

“It’s the first year in the Premier League for Luca Koleosho and Zeki Amdouni and both have three, four- or five-years’ growth. Luca runs into the box and wants to dribble. His end product will come although he has had an assist already.

“This journey for us is not easy but at least there’s something at the end of it and we can grow. I chose to play a back four that played together last season and that helped.

“The rest is just working on the training ground. Mistakes get punished much more than in the Championship. For us it’s a question of performance and confidence. We played against Nottingham Forest and are in the game so that means there are six or seven teams that we can compete with.”

Commenting on Foster’s red card he added: “It was dramatic. When you look at the gesture, it’s a moment of inexperience and something you can’t excuse, but at the same time, he has played his heart out for the team.

“Handballs and offsides, I will pass talking on those decisions. I just want to focus on getting the team right,” he said.
