Springboks return to action against Wales on same day as URC final

SA Rugby have announced that the World Champion Springboks will return to action for the first time since defending the Webb Ellis trophy, in a once-off Test against Wales at London’s Twickenham Stadium on 22 June.
The game against Wales will kick off the Springboks busy calendar for 2024. They are also scheduled to two Tests against Ireland and a game against Portugal as well as a full set of Rugby Championship fixtures.
Speaking at the game’s announcement Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus said: “We are thrilled to return to Twickenham in what will mark our first Test since the Rugby World Cup final in France.
“We may be playing on foreign territory, but we enjoy fantastic support from the expat community in London and its surrounds, as we saw last year where most of the supporters donned green and gold, so we are really looking forward to the match.”
Wales coach Warren Gatland was equally excited by the game adding: “To have the opportunity for our young squad to test itself against the world champions at a neutral venue is an extremely important experience and something that we will relish.”
The game will be played as part of a doubleheader as a Barbarians side will also play Fiji at the same venue later in the day.
The one potential issue with the fixture is that it is scheduled to be played on the same day as the final of the United Rugby Championship – which could mean players for both sides are unavailable, depending on who qualifies for the final.
The full fixture list for the Springboks for 2024 is as follows:
22 June: SA vs Wales (Twickenham, London)
6 July: SA vs Ireland (Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria)
13 July: SA vs Ireland (Kings Park, Durban)
20 July: SA vs Portugal (Free State Stadium, Bloemfontein)
10 August: Australia vs SA (Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane)
17 August: Australia vs SA (Optus Stadium, Perth)
31 August: SA vs New Zealand (Ellis Park, Johannesburg)
7 September: SA v New Zealand (Cape Town Stadium, Cape Town)
