Soweto derby win a big boost for Pirates as they chase CAF qualification for next season

March 12, 2024

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro was delighted with his side’s 3-2 win over Kaizer Chiefs in Saturday’s derby, with the Buccaneers twice coming from behind before clinching the winner at a sold-out FNB Stadium.

“This was a proper derby. This is the version of Pirates that we would all like to see in each game,” said Riveiro. “We need to keep analysing… I think we need to capitalise on this victory and understand the team we want to be.”

The win moved Pirates into second spot on the table, one point ahead of Stellenbosch and Supersport United, although both sides have a game in hand. Pirates are 12 points behind defending champs Mamelodi Sundowns, who have three games in hand over the Sea Robbers.

Saturday’s win also allowed Riveiro’s side to complete the League double over Chiefs, who are down in seventh place on 29 points. In-form Sundowns are unlikely to miss out on their seventh consecutive PSL league title, which makes second place (and a guarantee of CAF Champions League football next season) the prize that seven or eight teams are fighting for in the congested league table.

The lure of CAF competition is a particularly strong motivator for Pirates as they look to raise their game to the next level.

“It’s a competition where the club can only get more prestige and we can be able to test ourselves against clubs from other countries,” said Riveiro, who will be eager for the chance to repeat Pirates’ 1995 CAF triumph next season.

Pirates qualified for this year’s tournament after finishing second to Sundowns in the PSL last season, but were knocked out on penalties in the second round by Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy.

“We’ll play different types of football and accumulate experience as a group that will help us to be the team that we want to be in the future. There’s still a long way to go and there are other teams who are fighting for the same objective as us. It’s going to be tough,” added the Pirates manager.
