James Anderson on reaching 700 Test wickets: “I would’ve felt more excited if we’d won the Test”
March 13, 2024

England’s 41-year-old seamer James Anderson became the third bowler (and the first non-spinner) to reach 700 Test wickets, which he did during the fifth Test of the recent series against India.
However, the 6 ft 2 in bowler told the media he felt he had “nothing to celebrate”, claiming that statistics and records are not the reason he’s still subjecting his body to the rigours of Test cricket.
Wicket number 700 was Kuldeep Yadav, Anderson dismissing him caught behind on the final morning of the Test series, but Anderson underplayed the landmark, remarking that it had “been a long series, and I don’t know how I feel”. He also expressed his frustration at losing by an innings in Dharmasala, which saw the series end in a disappointing 4-1 loss.
“It was a nice moment and nice to do it at a picturesque ground,” Anderson said while a guest on the BBC podcast The Tailenders. “My dad was here so we had a drink, which was nice. He was more excited than I was. Maybe I would’ve felt more excited if we’d won the Test or the series.”
Each of the other two members of the 700 Club, however, were spinners – Sri Lanka’s Muthiah Muralidaran (800) and Australia’s Shane Warne (708).
“I don’t get anything out of that,” added Anderson. “I don’t get anything out of what other people say. That’s not why I play cricket. I don’t play cricket to get the milestones. I want to win games. I love playing for a team and that’s when I get the biggest buzz.
“That’s why I’m probably a little bit flat now, because we’ve lost 4-1 in this series, but I really enjoyed this tour. I’ve been on tours to India before where little cracks start appearing in the team and that’s not happened this time. We’ve stuck together really well, we really enjoy being together as a group and there is more to come from this team.”
