BAFANA BAFANA: ‘Bad behaviour’ cited as Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams sent packing by Hugo Broos

Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos was in a bad mood when he addressed the media on Monday evening as he confirmed that Stellenbosch FC midfielder Jayden Adams had been sent home for disciplinary reasons.

Broos, whose side is due to play back-to-back African Cup of Nations qualifiers against Congo, was also upset that several players had failed to arrive on time for the training camp and preparation which is taking place in Port Elizabeth. Additionally, Thalente Mbatha injured himself during the MTN8 final and has withdrawn due to the injury.

Speaking to the media a frustrated Broos said: “Our camp has not started well because, first of all, even today we don’t have all the players.

“Second, there have been some injuries so we had to replace players in the last 24 hours, which means the start was not really how I hoped it would be.

“We all saw Saturday’s game, we saw Thalente Mbatha went off the field so we knew he was injured.

“We also got news from Pirates saying Patrick Maswanganyi was also injured and that they need to do a scan. Sunday, no scan, so they did it this morning.

“Thalente won’t be with us because he has a knee injury. Patrick is not a problem — there was nothing seen on the scan, so he will arrive later today [Monday].

“It’s a pity Thalente is not here but things happen. I expect players today are Patrick and Bathusi Aubaas, who is replacing Thalente — I hope I will see them tonight.

“We will also wait for the arrival of Luke le Roux and then at least we can start working with all 23 players.”

In confirming the decision to send Adams packing, Broos used the words ‘bad behaviour’ but beyond that he refused to give details, but he did add: “If you ask something about a player, it’s that they are professionals, so if I feel that a guy doesn’t have that attitude, then for me it’s done.

“He’s not a guy who is 16, he’s not an old player either, but if he has the attitude that he had, the only thing I can do is get him out of the group, because this is not what I want from players.

“In the past months, several times I said, ‘What a group I have.’ I was so happy with the group – the right attitude, the right behaviour, professionalism, and everything you wanted.

“So, I can’t afford to let someone in that doesn’t have that attitude anymore, so it’s up to Jayden now to think about it, on what he’s going to do with his future.”

Bafana Bafana went into the key qualifying games sitting second in Group K, level on points with Uganda. “I want to avoid the stressful month of November. If we can get six points we will qualify. If we don’t, then maybe the two games against Sudan and Uganda can be tricky,” said Broos.

“Remember three years ago, the last 2022 World Cup qualifying game in Ghana, we would have had enough with one point but we lost. So let’s avoid that situation.

“I want to see the real South African team play. We didn’t see the South African team in our last two games.

“I was not happy with the performance. Our performance was not what I expected,” he said.

South Africa versus Congo at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium kicks off on Friday at 7pm.
