South Africa won the second Test against Sri Lanka as they took all the five wickets they needed within 70 minutes on Monday morning to win the game by 109 runs and the series 2-0.
When play resumed on Monday morning the tourists needed 142 runs to win, while South Africa needed five wickets. Key Sri Lankan batsmen Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva were at the crease.
For South Africa, getting those two out was key, while for Sri Lanka, their hopes of winning rested on the duo seeing them to the end.
It took a while for the breakthrough to come but with the wicket taking turn it came as no surprise that it was Keshav Maharaj who did the business. He found the edge of Mendis’ bat and Aiden Markram held a sharp low catch at slip.
Maharaj picked up a further two scalps on the morning as he ended with a secon innings five wicket haul. Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen grabbed the other wickets as South Africa closed the game out and cemented their position in the World Test Championship – where they are now it first position.
Speaking after the game Proteas skipper and Player of the Series Temba Bavuma said: “Good to be back, firstly. I’m enjoying the opportunity to be out with them. Lot of hunger and desire from my side, when the opportunities come and body allows, to put in performances for the team. Hopefully I was able grab them.
“Durban was tricky, first day conditions overhead. From my side, wanted to keep the intent of looking to score, not worry too much about technique and how it looks, also encourage the other players to do so.
“I felt fresh mentally and physically, was able to contribute. This Test for a lot of the guys was a proper Test. Rare that you get to play all five days, rare the game swings both sides, credit to Sri Lanka for the way they went about their business, asked the right questions, they made us work hard for the win.
“We’ll take a lot of pride as a batting group. All of us are super happy for a guy like Ryan Rickleton, with the ball it was Marco and Paterson. Guys putting in performances like that speaks of the hunger.
“The World Test Championship table looks good, we still have two games to go. Don’t know what the math looks like, want to continue what we’re doing, enjoy the victory, and in a couple of weeks time start speaking about Pakistan,” he said
