Australia beat India in final to claim WTC title

June 12, 2023

Australia were crowned World Test Champions

Australia were crowned World Test Champions after beating India by 209 runs in this week’s final at The Oval in London on Sunday.

India responded to Australia’s 469 all out and 270 for eight declared with 296 and 234 all out.

Batsman Travis Head was named Player of the Match for a first-innings 163.

Former Australian captain Steven Smith also scored a century.

Spinner Nathan Lyon completed a fourth-innings four-wicket haul.

“We’ve played awesome cricket for the last two years and being there at the end holding the trophy feels really well deserved,” said Australian captain Pat Cummins.

“We’ll sit around in the changing rooms for a while and then we’ll find a nice sunny English beer garden somewhere to sit back and celebrate.

“It’s been an amazing two years. We’ve had this final in the diary for a while.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma, meanwhile, suggested the World Test Championship final be contested across a three-match series.

“You need to have fair opportunities to both the teams. In the next cycle, if it is possible, a three-match series would be ideal,” said Sharma.

“I would love that. But is there a time? That’s the big question. It’s about finding that window where it can be fit in. In an event like this, you work hard for two years and then you have only one shot at it.

“You cannot get into that momentum that you need in Test cricket. Test cricket is all about finding that rhythm, finding that momentum.”

South Africa finished the 2021-23 World Test Championship in third position. New Zealand were the reigning champions prior to being succeeded by Australia on Sunday.
