Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos announces his 23-man World Cup qualifiers squad

Ross Barkley & Thabiso Kutumela

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has committed himself to a final 23-man squad as he takes his side into the next qualifying round of matches for the 2026 Football World Cup to be held in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Broos has narrowed his selection down from an initial 36-man squad he announced mid-May.

South Africa is currently in second spot on the CAF Group C qualifications table with three points, after winning one of their two matches. Rwanda tops the table with four points after picking up a win and a draw.

Nigeria, Lesotho and Zimbabwe are all on two points after each picking up two draws, while Benin is on just one point. The top side is guaranteed a place at the 2026 World Cup finals, while the team finishing in second place has the possibility of competing in the play-off to advance to the inter-confederation playoffs.

The sides play each other on a home and away basis before the winner of the group is confirmed, which will be in late October 2025.

Broos’ squad will take on Nigeria’s Super Eagles at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday, 7 June, before they host the Zimbabwe Warriors at home four days later at the  Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Tuesday, 11 June.
