BAFANA BAFANA: Themba Zwane goal gets Bafana a draw in Abidjan
October 18, 2023

Bafana Bafana delivered a massively improved performance as they held an Ivory Coast side packed with big-name stars, to a 1-1 draw in Abidjan on Tuesday night.
The Ivory Coast side included names like Wilfried Zaha, Sebastien Haller, Seko Fofana, and Jonathan Bamba while for Hugo Broos’ side, it was Lyle Foster who was the marquee name – although he only took to the field as a substitute, deep into the second half.
South Africa opened the scoring in the 8th minute when Themba Zwane tapped in after good work from his Sundowns teammate Teboho Mokoena.
It looked like the early strike would be enough to give the visitors a win, but it wasn’t to be as the home side built pressure and eventually broke through courtesy of Borussia Dortmund striker Haller. The burly, former West Ham man was gifted a free header in the 65th minute to steer Oumar Diakite’s cross past the fit-again Ronwen Williams.
Playing in front of a capacity crowd at Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny the crowd was vociferous in the final minutes as they bayed for a win, but it wasn’t to be as Williams and a clearly motivated defense put everything into denying the 50th-ranked Ivorians and securing the draw.
