Cape Town Spurs sack Shaun Bartlett after seventh straight loss
October 2, 2023

A startling lack of results in the PSL since being promoted via the play-offs at the end of last season has led to the sacking of Cape Town Spurs boss Shaun Bartlett.
Spurs lost their seventh consecutive game on the weekend, as they went down 3-1 in the Cape Derby to local rivals Cape Town City, a result that leaves them rooted to the bottom of the league table, still without a point and six points adrift of second from bottom side Richards Bay FC.
A statement released by the club on Monday read: “Following an extensive review and discussions with Shaun Bartlett and taking into consideration the current set of results, we have mutually agreed to the termination of the head coach’s contract with immediate effect.
“The club wishes to place on record our appreciation for Shaun’s work during his time at the club, most significantly promoting the club back to the PSL.”
In his last address to the media, after the Cape Derby defeat Bartlett was naturally quizzed about his prospects at the club. His answer suggested that he knew what was coming: “The best way to answer that is in the next 48 hours to see what happens and what conversation will be had, and what’s decided.
“I don’t really disclose too much as to confidential stuff. We all know what the situation is. We’ve always been a club that promote young players and not go too much into the market.
“But sometimes a level-up is maybe too much for certain players. So those are things that we have to assess and see where we can make changes.”
Cape Town Spurs are in action again on Wednesday when they host SuperSport United.
