ECLF: West Ham’s Moyes says he’s getting better with age.
June 7, 2023

West Ham boss David Moyes has described the prospect of managing a team in a European Cup Final as surreal, describing Wednesday night’s final against Fiorentina at Prague’s Eden Arena as the biggest moment of his career.
Despite a long and storied career in football management, which started when he was just 35 years old, the now 60-year-old Moyes has never led a team to a European final.
Speaking to the BBC ahead of the game Moyes said: “It is slightly surreal. To turn up and have your own dressing room is a big thrill for me. I really hope I can take it to the next level and win the game.”
No West Ham boss has been able to secure a European title since Ron Greenwood’s side lifted the European Cup Winners Cup trophy in 1965 when they beat 1860 Munich 2-0.
“I’ve had a really good career since I started coaching at 35,” he said, reflecting on a career that saw him at the helm of sides like Everton, Manchester United, Real Sociedad and Sunderland before he moved to West Ham in 2017.
“Over 1,000 matches, been in some finals, had some promotions. But this is the biggest moment. To be a coach for as long as I’ve been, you’re obviously doing something right.
“It’s great to be sitting here in a European final. For any manager it’s a thrill, one of the pinnacles you can get in football as a coach.
“Hopefully it’s the start. I’ve always said the best years are still to come and I’m certainly enjoying the moment and being here.”
Wednesday night’s Europa Conference League Final kicks off at 9pm South African time.
