Eddie jones does his best to look past shock Fiji loss

September 18, 2023

Springboks versus Argentina

Australia may have lost to Fiji for the first time since 1954, but beleaguered coach Eddie Jones says he is not overly concerned by the result.

In the biggest surprise at the World Cup to date Fiji ran out 22-15 winners over the former World Champions, to cast the Wallabies’ chances of advancing from the group stages into serious doubt.

But Jones says he has confidence in his charges and that he is focussing on building for the future with a young and talented squad.

Speaking after the game he said: “We’ve gone with a young team; I’ve got no regrets at all.

“We’re building a team for the future and we’re going to go through some pain and some of the young players are going to go through some pain and that’s how you have an apprenticeship.”

Commenting on a troubled performance from 22-year-old flyhalf Carter Gordon he said:  “He’s got plenty of support.

“Carter’s a young 10, he’s going to have those days.

“I’ve said this before, he’s always going to have those days, but he’ll bounce back, he’s a good young player.”

With two games played the top of Pool C is a congested place. Wales are top with 10 points, but they face Australia next in what is a do-or-die encounter for both sides. Fiji are second and Australia third – both with six points.

Looking ahead to the Wales game, Jones said: “We’ve got Wales next week and the great thing about the World Cup tournament is it’s not the end of the road.

“I’ve got no doubt that we’ll get a response. I was really pleased with the character our young team showed.

“When Fiji’s on the front foot in a fairly hostile environment it would have been easy for our team to go away but they didn’t.

“And I think if you look at the records, the stats show that’s the youngest finishing group for Australia since 1995,” he said.
