EPL: Eddie Howe elated as Newcastle United secure Champions League spot
May 23, 2023

Newcastle United will play in the Champions league next season while Leicester’s hopes of avoiding relegation are out of their hands after they played to a 0-0 draw on Monday night.
Going into the match the Foxes knew that nothing less than a win would keep their survival chances in their own hands. They must now hope to win their final game of the season against West Ham on Sunday while at the same time hoping that Everton lose or draw when they host Bournemouth.
But it was job done for Newcastle who made sure that at worst they will end the season in 4th spot, enough to secure them a place in Europe’s premier competition.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game a delighted Magpies manager Eddie Howe said: “Our expectation for this season certainly wasn’t top four.
“I think you always hope, you always believe and you have to dream.
“But we didn’t feel that we were ready for that. After last season’s battle with relegation it was whether we could consolidate and become a better team.

“To not have that flirtation with relegation and try to give it a go, it’s just been incredible.”
With wealthy owners backing them and a place in the Champions League secured there was immediate speculation that the off-season would lead to a spending spree, but Howe was quick to play that down.
“There is a very small pool of players to look at. We have to recruit wisely, as we have done in every transfer window to date. This will be our toughest one.
“We’ll think about next season during the summer. We don’t want to go far away from what we’ve done. We are realistic to know there will be more games and that’s a challenge.
“Whenever you achieve something you’re not just happy to participate. You want to succeed and want success. I want success massively for this football club. We’ll enjoy tonight, but we want to bring silverware here if we can in the future.”
