After starting their EURO 2024 with a 1-0 win over Serbia, England were looking to top the table – and secure their path to the playoffs – when Harry Kane slotted home the opener on 18 minutes against Denmark in Frankfurt on Thursday afternoon.

A late, long-range strike from Morten Hjulmand leveled the score at 1-1, and Denmark came close to snatching the win as England’s second-half performance went from bad to worse.

“Clearly, we’re disappointed with the level of the two performances we’ve had, so we’ve got to go and analyze that in-depth and find some solutions to addressing the issues that we have,” said England manager Gareth Southgate in a press conference after the match.

“We know the level can be higher. Maybe the biggest thing is we have to accept the environment that we’re in and the expectations that are around us. At the moment, we’re falling a little bit short of that.

“Ultimately, that’s my responsibility. I’m the manager, and I’ve got to guide this group in the best way possible to achieve extraordinary things.

“It’s clear in terms of the balance of the team that we don’t have our best left-back [Luke Shaw] available so that denies you the opportunity for that balance. I think Kieran Trippier has done an incredible job for the team. His spirit, organisation and desire have helped us get over the line in the last two games.”

England are currently on top of Group C with four points ahead of the last round of matches next Tuesday. A win or a draw against Slovenia will see England through to the knockout stage, but if they lose and Denmark wins, England would be knocked out of the tournament.
