Former Pirates coach Roger de Sa opens door to former rivals Kaizer Chiefs – “Everybody knows I’m available”

Roger de Sa

The search for a new coach for struggling Kaizer Chiefs has seen the spotlight turn on former Orlando Pirates coach Roger de Sa, who is a free agent since his term as Qatar assistant coach came to an end.

Chiefs fired former coach Molefi Ntseki in October 2023, and De Sa confirmed that if he were to join Chiefs he would rather it happened before the end of the season.

“It’s always better to start early than later, even if it’s not an active role,” De Sa told KickOff magazine. “It would give their next head coach a bit of a head start. I think that would be advisable if they are gonna change.

“Everybody knows I’m available. I’m sitting at home and looking at options. I’ve had a couple of contacts from different countries and I’ll make a decision. I’m free. I’m employed by my wife right now – she is the boss.”

De Sa added that he had never actively applied for a job, detailing how in the past interested clubs would always approach him and give him a run-down of the situation at the club and their expectations.

“They know where I am. If they were interested, they would contact me. I’m sure Chiefs will decide on what they want and what they want to achieve and where they wanna go. They’ve been in a struggle for the last couple of years, but I think they are a team that can easily turn a corner at any moment,” added De Sa, whose credentials speak for themselves.

The former Moroka Swallows, Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper was part of Carlos Queiroz’s coaching staff that took Egypt to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in 2021 before leading Qatar in the 2022 Fifa World Cup.

“They are a massive club – they are a glamorous club. They’ve been well-run, they were one of the top clubs in Africa. I’m sure they are on the verge of a turnaround. It can’t be far away,” said De Sa. “Chiefs need to just correct one or two things that have not gone their way.”
