France’s SA-born lock Paul Willemse gets extended ban
February 7, 2024

France’s South African-born lock Paul Willemse has been banned for two Six Nations games and will miss Les Bleus upcoming games against Scotland and Italy.
His ban comes after he was twice yellow carded in the first half of France’s opening Six Nations game against Ireland. The second yellow card was upgraded to a red after a bunker review.
The disciplinary panel that reviewed Willemse’s indiscretions ruled: “The committee recognised that while both actions were reckless, there was no evidence to suggest that the player had acted maliciously or intentionally in either case.
“The committee also noted that the player had behaved admirably during the proceedings and had shown remorse for his actions.”
France are already without several other key second rowers WITH Thibaud Flament, Emmanuel Meafou and Romain Taofifenua all out injured.
Willemse could also miss games for his club side Montpellier but he stands to have his ban reduced by a week if he participates in World Rugby’s coaching programme that’s designed to improve tackling technique which would make him available for Montpellier’s trip to Oyonnax on 2 March.
