Hugo Broos: We deserved to beat Morocco
June 19, 2023

Head coach Hugo Broos praised Bafana Bafana after Saturday’s 2-1 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier win over Morocco in Johannesburg.
Both teams had already qualified for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations prior to Saturday’s fixture.
“I’m very happy not only because we won the game, but we deserved to win the game,” said Broos.
“If you look at the chances that we had, I was happier with the performance because I said before the game that the result wasn’t important.
“I liked to see a good performance and I liked to see the progression we made in the last month.
“We saw a team that promised progression in the past months and in this game, we played against a very good team.
“We were never dominated and on the contrary, we had our dominant moments, and at times, we had some very good chances.”
The 2024 Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled for 13 January to 11 February 2023 in Ivory Coast. South Africa, Morocco and reigning champions Senegal are among 10 teams to have already qualified for the tournament.
“You don’t build a team in one day. You need time and, in that time, defeats can be very useful. We had some and they were very useful,” added Broos.
“On Saturday, you saw a team that played good football, a team that creates chances and that’s what we want.
“We still need to improve, but if we can do that in the next months, we can play well in the AFCON in January.”
