Hugo Broos: Winning AFCON is fantastic feeling

January 16, 2024

Hugo Broos ahead of Rwanda

Coach Hugo Broos is determined to win a second Africa Cup of Nations – this time with Bafana Bafana.

Broos won the AFCON title with Cameroon in 2017. After leaving Cameroon and returning to work in the Belgian Pro League, Broos joined South Africa in 2021.

“When you won it once, you want to win it twice – it’s a fantastic feeling winning an AFCON,” said Broos.

“And I said already before, I’m a European but the intensity and joy, everything around winning AFCON is unique, it’s really unique.

“So it was a fantastic experience six years ago, I dream of it doing it the second time but saying is much easier than doing it, let’s start and do our best and see where we arrive.”

Bafana Bafana have been pooled with Mali, Tunisia and Namibia for this year’s AFCON in Ivory Coast. Their campaign will start against Mali on Tuesday.

“I think everyone is happy we’re one day before the game, you know there’s always preparation but we’re looking forward to playing – we’re aware we have a tough opponent with Mali,” added Broos.

“On the other side we believe in our chances and I hope we can achieve our best level so we can win the game, it’s very important to start with victory.”

Senegal are the reigning AFCON champions. Egypt are the most successful team in the history of the tournament with seven titles. South Africa have won the AFCON title once – in 1996.
