May 23, 2023

Mumbai Indians

The Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians meet for the second play-off in the 2023 Indian Premier League.

Talking points

The winner of this match will play the Gujarat Titans or Chennai Super Kings. Unlike the other play-off, the loser of this eliminator will not get second chance and will be knocked out of the 2023 IPL. This match will be played at a neutral venue – Chepauk.

Lucknow have strung together three consecutive wins and have plenty of momentum. Mumbai overcame several successive defeats at the start of the tournament to eventually book this play-off berth. They’re chasing a sixth IPL title.

The Super Giants continue to play without their captain KL Rahul, who remains sidelined by injury. Krunal Pandya has been an excellent stand-in and, once again, it’ll be interesting to see how the extra responsibility empowers his batting and bowling, if at all.

Mumbai’s bowling could be exposed in the absence of the injured Jasprit Bumrah and Jofra Archer. That said, their seam attack has done relatively well for an extended period without the two international stars. Regardless, spin could have more of a say than seam here.

Head-to-head

The Super Giants and Mumbai have a brief history. They have met on three occasions. Lucknow have won all three of those meetings.

Stars to watch

Cameron Green effectively hit a century to push Mumbai into the play-offs recently. The Australian all-rounder has had a solid maiden IPL season. Now is his time to shine again – and he might have a role to play with the ball.

Quinton de Kock debuted this IPL season with a half-century – and has put together a few good starts since. He needs to convert to 50 and beyond again, though. The Proteas star’s wicketkeeping will need to be on point, too.

Prediction

Lucknow should beat Mumbai here. The five-time champions have done well to recover from last year’s last-place finish and this season’s shaky start, but it will likely end here.
