LA LIGA: Pundits hit out at ’embarrassing’ La Liga president Javier Tebas
May 23, 2023

Former England footballers Chris Sutton and Micah Richards have both hit out at the President of La Liga, Javier Tebas, after his Twitter battle with Real Madrid and Brazil star Vinicius Junior.
Vinicius was the subject of racist abuse during Madrid’s 1-0 loss against Valencia on Sunday. The ugly situation was amplified further when Tebas resorted to victim blaming instead of acknowledging the dire nature of the abuse.
Commenting on the situation Richards told the BBC: “Tebas has tried to make himself the victim in all this, it’s absolutely embarrassing what he has come out with in his statement.
“It makes my blood boil and that is part of the problem. It’s not just a football issue, it’s a life that people go through every single day.”

Richards fury comes after Tebas’ first reaction to the abuse and the reaction expressed to it by Vinicius was to accuse the footballer of failing to meet him on a couple of occasions to talk about racism in football. “Before you criticise and slander La Liga, you need to inform yourself properly,” said Tebas.
Richards added: “People don’t care enough and that is the problem, if people cared they would do something about it.
“It’s not about taking the knee or wearing Kick it Out shirts because it’s not working. I’m tired of having to talk about the same things that happens over and over again.
“We have spoken enough. The people who need to sort themselves out are the ones who are being racist. Until harsher punishments are delivered it’s always going to be the same.
“If Javier thinks like that, what chance do we have?”
Richards’ thoughts were echoed by former Premier League winner and England striker Chris Sutton who said: “When you have someone in such a powerful position, to have a Twitter spat with Vinicius Jr, to tell him he is wrong, it’s glaringly obvious to everyone there needs to be changed in that position.
“That is a starting point,” he said.
