Lukhanyo Am recalled as Mapimpi heads home
October 2, 2023

Centre Lukhanyo Am has been called up to the Springbok squad to replace the injured Makazole Mapimpi who was forced out of the event with a broken eye socket.
Am, who famously made the no-look pass to Mapimpi when South Africa scored their first-ever try in a Rugby World Cup final, was left out of the original Springbok squad due to a knee injury.
There had been some speculation that the Springboks would use Mapimpi’s injury as a chance to bring in a hooker – which they didn’t do when Malcolm Marx was injured, but they have resisted the temptation and gone for Am, who, when fully fit, is one of the best outside centres in the world.
Confirming his return to the fray the Springboks simply posted on Twitter: “Am is coming”.
Am, who has 35 Springbok caps to his name, will bolster the resources at centre, where thus far, the role of 13 has been filled by Jesse Kriel and Canan Moodie.
