Mbappe intends to stay at PSG

June 14, 2023

PSG striker Kylian Mbappe

PSG striker Kylian Mbappe says he will stay with the French Champions for one more season and see out his current contract.

In a message posted on Twitter, the World Cup winner looked to quash speculation that he was looking to move by stressing that he would see out his deal with the French side – although his option to extend the deal for an extra year was not something he would take up.

The Twitter message reportedly follows a letter sent by Mbappe’s representatives to PSG confirming his decision to reject the extension.

A spokesperson for Mbappe told BBC: “After maintaining publicly in recent weeks that he would be a PSG player next season, Kylian Mbappe has not asked to leave this summer and has just confirmed to the club that he would not be activating the extra year.”

Mbappe’s statement and his decision to decline an extra year means that PSG could lose the striker on a free – an expensive loss given that they paid Monaco 180m Euro for him in 2017.

Since making the move to Paris Mbappe has scored 212 goals in 260 games.

Commenting on the situation L’Equipe’s Loic Tanzi told BBC World Service he thought PSG would look to off-load the striker. “The more complicated thing now is to find an agreement with Real Madrid because PSG won’t want to do any gifts to Real and the Spanish club will try for a low price because they will say they don’t want to pay a big amount of money for a player who is out of contract in a year.

“I think he wants to go to Real Madrid, but Liverpool is also there since many years as well. They kept contact with the family for many years. And I would add Manchester United because they will have a new project soon under new owners,” he said.
