Orlando Pirates boss Jose Riveiro unworried by opening loss

August 8, 2023

Orlando Pirates

Orlando Pirates manager Jose Riveiro says he is not worried about his sides’ opening weekend loss to Stellenbosch, insisting that for the most part he was pleased with the performance that his team delivered.

Indeed, the Buccaneers dominated the game for large periods, bossing both the territory and possession stats, but despite that it was Stellenbosch who snuck a 1-0 win, courtesy of a goal from promising young winger Antonio van Wyk.

Riveiro said he and his charges had put the result behind them and were already focussed on their second game, Tuesday’s home clash against Royal AM.

Speaking to The Sowetan Riveiro said: “I did not like the last minutes of the game… it was chaotic. We were a bit in a hurry, not doing what we were supposed to do at the moment that Stellenbosch were defending really deep.

“Apart from the last 15 minutes, I think everything was positive.

“Obviously, there were mistakes, but we don’t care so much about that.

“We had enough chances to at least get a point, but it wasn’t our day. We play again on Tuesday and our focus is already there,” Riveiro said.
