Mamelodi Sundowns manager Rulani Mokwena said he was okay with just taking a point from the Tshwane Derby on Tuesday night as his side played to a 1-1 draw against SuperSport United.

Speaking after the game Mokwena was quick to explain the absence of key players Peter Shalulile and Tashreeq Matthews from his starting eleven.

In a game that saw the Brazilians open the scoring in the 30th minutes through a Teboho Mokoena strike, parity was restored just four minutes later as Bradley Grobler equalized.

Speaking to SuperSport after the game Mokwena, whose side are now unbeaten in 42 games in the PSL said: “Thapelo Morena deserved some minutes; Mendieta has been doing well at training, so he also deserves some minutes – and let’s see, Peter Shalulile, we’re trying to manage him.

“Tash Matthews is struggling a bit because it’s Ramadan – we wanted to start him but he’s struggling a bit because of the fasting and you could see when he came on.

“They have to try their best and I’m happy with their effort.

“I am proud of the players; it was a good effort. I am happy also for players who have not been getting a lot of game time, so okay we can’t win them all, can we? We take a point, and we move on.

“We lacked a little bit of compactness, but it’s difficult when you play against a team with a lot of long balls. In the first half, the intensity of Grant Kekana, Zuko Mdunyelwa, and Divine Lunga, to step up a little bit, five more steps with a bit of intensity.

“We did well. I’m happy with the effort and the commitment of the players, they represented the club well and you can’t win them all can you? So, we move on, we try to improve, try to utilize all the players that we have,” he said.

The result leaves Sundowns 13 points out of the chasing pack with two games still in hand. SuperSport United are in third place, level on points with Orlando Pirates but behind them on goal difference.
