T20 WORLD CUP: Australia sweep Bangladesh aside to open their Super 8 account

Australia made a great start to the Super 8 stage of the T20 Cricket World Cup, beating Bangladesh by 28 runs on the DLS Method. Bangladesh struggled to post 140/8 off their 20 overs, Najmul Hossain Shanto (41) and Towhid Hridoy (40) doing the bulk of the scoring for Bangladesh.

Pat Cummins starred with the ball for Australia, returning figures of 4-0-29-3 (econ 7.25) which included a hat-trick spread across the 18th and 20th overs, which helped to blunt Bangladesh’s attempt to cash in with late runs at the death.

David Warner scored a brisk 53 not out to get the Australian innings off to a flying start before rain ended the match with Australia well ahead of the DLS target.

Cummins’ hat-trick was his first for Australia, but it also helped to peg Bangladesh back and break up their chances of hitting some late boundaries.

“I had a few hat-tricks in juniors but never for Australia. Agar and Ellis on the bench have T20 hat-tricks so good to join that club. Pretty awesome to tick that off. The boys are welcoming me in the club and it’s a good club to be part of,” said Cummins.

“We were fairly polished tonight. The goal was to win the game and we did that really well. The run rate is also a big positive.”

“That was a really exciting bowling performance – the boys played well tonight. It is a very good playing XI, but we’ve got 15 guys that can take us deep in the World Cup. We’ll pick teams based on conditions. Long way to go,” said Australian captain Mitchell Marsh.

“Against this kind of team you have to take some gambling, like we put Rishad up at No. 4. We tried something different. I think very important today that the top order got some runs. We struggled the last couple of matches. The bowling unit did a good job in the last two to three games so hopefully bowlers will continue their form,” said Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto.
