TENNIS: Accumulator tips and previews as tennis action heads to Brazil

November 21, 2023

The WTA Tour’s Brasil Tennis Cup is back on the hard courts of Florianópolis.

Also known as the MundoTenis Open, this event gives several players another chance to add to their wins haul for 2023.

The five top 100 women in the field will be the players to watch this week.

Emma Navarro is the big favourite as the top seed alongside Diana Shnaider, Nadia Podoroska and Sara Errani, as well as Diane Parry.

WTA Florianopolis: Diane Parry vs Anca Alexia Todoni | Pick: Parry
WTA Florianopolis: Elizabeth Mandlik vs Conny Perrin | Pick: Mandlik
WTA Florianopolis: Emma Navarro vs Solana Sierra | Pick: Navarro
WTA Florianopolis: Jessica Bouzas Maneiro vs Nadia Podoroska | Pick: Podoroska
WTA Florianopolis: Leolia Jeanjean vs Petra Marcinko | Pick: Jeanjean
WTA Florianopolis: Maria Carle vs Polona Hercog | Pick: Carle
WTA Florianopolis: Martina Capurro Taborda vs Carolina Bohrer Martins | Taborda
WTA Florianopolis: Miriam Bulgaru vs Laura Pigossi | Pick: Pigossi

WTA Florianopolis: Diane Parry vs Anca Alexia Todoni

Diane Parry has just returned to the top 100 and will be out to continue her climb up the WTA Rankings.

Parry enjoyed a run to the final in Colina last week and is in great late season form.

She faces 19-year-old Romanian prospect Anca Alexia Todoni, who is a bit of an unknown factor.

Todoni has two ITF titles to her name this season and should not be taken lightly.

WTA Florianopolis: Elizabeth Mandlik vs Conny Perrin

Elizabeth Mandlik is chasing her second victory over journeywoman Conny Perrin.

When they last met, Mandlik was a young player trying to break through to the WTA Tour, and she claimed an upset win over Perrin.

However, this time around, it will be Mandlik who is highly favoured.

Perrin has the edge on years on the tour, but on recent form, there is only one player who is likely to come through this clash.

WTA Florianopolis: Emma Navarro vs Solana Sierra

Emma Navarro has had a few close calls with WTA titles this season and has been tearing it up on the ITF circuit, powering her surge up into the top 50.

Navarro is a player to watch in 2024, especially on clay courts, which she has shown an affinity for across this season, winning 37 of her 47 matches on the surface.

Solana Sierra has also been handy on clay, but the Argentine hasn’t earned a win over a top 50 player in her career as yet.

Navarro should have all her bases covered in this contest, even against a player she is yet to take on.

WTA Florianopolis: Jessica Bouzas Maneiro vs Nadia Podoroska

Nadia Podoroska has been a consistent performer across 2023 and faces Spain’s Jessica Maneiro for the first time.

Podoroska has only won a single ITF title this season but has made two full tour semi-finals in a good campaign.

She should enjoy being back in South America, and Podoroska will be out to continue her good touch after three wins in Colina last week.

Maneiro was beaten in the round of 16 last week but will be hard-pressed to reach the same stage this week.

WTA Florianopolis: Leolia Jeanjean vs Petra Marcinko

Leolia Jeanjean will be out to turn around a poor record against Petra Marcinko.

The veteran Frenchwoman has lost to her teenaged opponent twice already in two upset losses.

Marcinko hasn’t been in action at all since her Monsatir exit in mid-October, which could count against her.

This will be the highest level these players have met at, with their previous clashes coming in ITF events.

WTA Florianopolis: Maria Carle vs Polona Hercog

Maria Carle has a recent clay court win over Polona Hercog, which sets her up as the clear favourite in their first round meeting in Florianopolis.

Carle won a straight sets victory over former top 50 player Hercog, who has been tumbling down through the rankings after a poor 2023.

Carle won a W40 title in Pazardzhik not so long ago and has a lot more time on court under her belt of late.

Hercog will need to channel her form of years gone by, but she might not have it in her to best Carle.

WTA Florianopolis: Martina Capurro Taborda vs Carolina Bohrer Martins

Martina Capurro Taborda has come of age to some extent this season after several years of underperforming on the WTA Tour.

She can make further progress if she can get through her meeting with Carolina Martins.

Taborda and Martins are both out to snap losing sequences, but only one will avoid going 0-3.

Taborda has won five ITF titles this season to power her surge up the rankings and will be out to prove she belongs on the full tour.

WTA Florianopolis: Miriam Bulgaru vs Laura Pigossi

In their only previous meeting, Laura Pigossi fought back from a set down to win a clash on clay in July.

Bulgaru has the better record on clay this season, but that head-to-head result could be an indicator of how this one will go.

Pigossi will need to take her chances with Bulgaru, aware of what she needs to do in order to get the win.

Neither player has been able to string wins together in recent weeks, but Pigossi seems to be likely to shade this encounter.
