Tiger Woods backs Rory McIlroy to complete the career Grand Slam by winning this year’s Masters

April 10, 2024

Rory McIlroy

Irish golfer Rory McIlroy has been on the verge of winning the career Grand Slam for the past decade. His last Major win came in 2014, when he won his second US PGA Championship as well as claiming The Open Championship for the first time.

At that stage all he needed to complete the career Grand Slam was his Masters Green Jacket… but he hasn’t won a Major since then, and his best finish at Augusta coming with his second-place finish in 2022.

“I know I’ve got the potential to do it too,” said McIlroy ahead of this year’s Masters, but Tiger Woods was more outspoken about McIlroy’s chances.

“No question, he’ll do it at some point. Rory’s too talented, too good. He’s going to be playing this event for a very long time. He’ll get it done. It’s just a matter of when,” said Woods.

“I think Rory will be a great Masters champion one day, and it could be this week. The talent that he has, the way he plays the game, the golf course fits his eye… it’s just a matter of time,” added the five-time Masters winner

Since then he has had nine attempts to win the Masters, with a stunning final round of 64 two years ago seeing him finish second, three shots behind Scheffler. However, that was sandwiched between two missed cuts.

If McIlroy were to complete the career Grand Slam he would become only the sixth player in the history of men’s golf to do this. Four Americans have achieved the feat (Jack Nicklaus, Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan and Tiger Woods) along with South African golfing great Gary Player.

The Masters will be contested this year from 11-14 April.
