Weekend’s Rugby World Cup preview and tips
October 13, 2023

It’s time for us to make our picks for the four Rugby World Cup quarter-finals this weekend.
Incredibly, all four Rugby World Cup quarter-finals are North vs South battles.
Fiji are the outliers as the only team in the last eight not engaged in either the Rugby Championship or the Six Nations.
Ireland remains tournament favourites but will face their biggest test of the tournament when they take on the All Blacks.
Wales probably can’t believe their unbelievable luck which could see them waltz into the semi-finals without really being tested.
England lost to Fiji at Twickenham ahead of the Rugby World Cup but another loss would be unthinkable after the islanders loss to Portugal exposed their weaknesses.
The final match of the weekend is arguably the biggest as hosts France face defending champions South Africa.
Wales vs Argentina | Pick: Wales
Ireland vs New Zealand | Pick: Ireland
England vs Fiji | Pick: England
France vs South Africa | Pick: France
Wales vs Argentina
The bookmakers are wise to the threat posed by Wales winger Louis Rees-Zammit and he is the favourite to score first in this quarter-final.
With Dan Biggar returning it signals that Wales will be trying to play a low-risk game against Argentina. The Red Dragons should concede less penalties than Argentina.
Wales should be good to secure a 6-10 point win over Argentina when stacking up the sides.
Argentina will need to score first to prevent from falling into the Wales scoreboard pressure trap.
Ireland vs New ZealandÂ
Expect this to be a low-scoring match where one mistake could decide the outcome of the match if not the tournament.
Backing the wings Mack Hansen and Will Jordan to both score in the match is a decent percentage punt.
Ireland should win but probably won’t manage to do so by more than five points.
Jonny Sexton has been at the heart of Ireland’s great form and is likely to be the first man on the board in this match.
England vs FijiÂ
Fiji will draw money given the generous odds on them repeating their upset of England last month.
However, England are likely to win this one by 10-15 points at least having come through their group unbeaten.
Another market attarcting interest will be Fiji to score the first try in the match and for a try to also be the first points scored.
Inspirational Fiji back Waisea Nayacalevu is a player to watch as the potential scorer of the first try.
France vs South AfricaÂ
Damian Penaud is chasing a Rugby World Cup record for tries and is expected to score at some time in this clash.
It will also be very tough for France to keep South Africa’s Bongi Mbonambi from rumbling over their line.
Thomas Ramos has kicked very well in the Rugby World Cup and should end the match as the top scorer.
France could open the scoring with a try and could be worth backing to get on the board with a five-pointer.
