What the experts say about the Nottingham Forest points deduction
March 19, 2024

Nottingham Forest fell into the relegation zone on Monday night after the Premier League announced that they would be docked four points for breaching the PL rules around financial sustainability.
They are the second side this season, after Everton, to be fined in this way. And while it looks likely that they will appeal against the ruling the penalties and teh way the league are dealing with the issue has come in for much criticism.
Below are the comments and insights from experts:
Nottingham Forest (Official club statement):
We were extremely dismayed by the tone and content of the Premier League’s submissions before the Commission. After months of engagement with the Premier League, and exceptional cooperation throughout, this was unexpected and has harmed the trust and confidence we had in the Premier League.
Shay Given (Former Ireland and Newcastle Goalkeeper):
The Premier League need to take a long hard look at it and say, ‘this is clearly not working.’ There must be a better system we can put in place to stop clubs overspending in the first place. You’re talking about lawyers deciding football matches or appeals, and it’s nonsense.
Conor Coady (England and Leicester City defender):
From a player’s point of view, it’s so tough being in the dressing room and you’re reading things about it could be this day or it could be that day, especially when it’s a tough season anyway and you’re struggling to pick up points.
At any point you could be docked four, six, 10 points or whatever it is. It’s so tough mentally, you have to keep your mind focused as a footballer but to do it is tough.
All the teams that are involved, not just the ones that are being punished, to not know what is going on at this stage of the season is just crazy.
Lee Westwood (Ryder Cup golfer and Nottingham Forest fan):
They should consult the Man City lawyers! They seem s*** hot on this stuff.
Barney Ronay (Guardian Journalist):
It can’t be a conspiracy if you’re one of 20 parties who sign those rules off every year. This is in fact the opposite of a conspiracy. It’s due process in action. And while the sense of incompetence and double-dealing some Forest fans will feel is entirely justified, it would make a lot more sense if those feelings were directed towards their own club’s ownership. Who is really to blame here? The rules? Or a club executive that thought it was a good idea to overspend on 29 new players while being co-steered through these treacherous waters, if we are to believe the iconography, by the owner’s then 23-year-old son? Hmm. Tough one.
