Sports betting is crammed with weird terms that can sometimes bamboozle and intimidate new punters or someone who and wants to place a bet for the first time. On this article, we will take you through some of the terms and slang words which are used for several aspects of sports betting. The list will be in alphabetic order, we will breakdown what each term means.

Accumulator

An Accumulator is a bet that involves two or more selections on a single ticket. To cut the confusion, two selections are often called a double bet, three will be a treble and four or more will be called an accumulator or bet multiple.

Ante-post betting

Ante-post betting, also known as futures betting, are longer term bets. Putting it simply, ante-post is a type of bet where the event, such as the Soccer World Cup, will not take place for some time. You could place a bet on a team to win the World Cup month before the event, meaning you can place a bet in January while the event takes place in July.

Banker

A banker bet is your preferred selection, the one you are most confident with and the one you think is most likely to win. For example, Manchester City to win at home to Leeds United will be most people’s banker bet because it is almost guaranteed to win. Such teams are usually short-priced, meaning you can’t get good odds on such matches.

Bookmaker

A licensed individual who sets daily betting odds and accepts bets. PlayTsogo is a licenced bookmaker.

Bookie

This is shortened from bookmaker and it’s more popular than the full name.

Blinkers

Blinkers are semi-circular cups that sit around the eyes of the horse. They are attached to the horses’ bridle and come in various shapes, sizes and colours. However, the aim of blinkers is always the same: to focus the horse on looking forward.

Cheekpieces      

A form of headgear which consists of pieces of sheepskin placed on either side of the bridle and performs a similar job as blinkers in helping the horse to concentrate.

Double bet

A double bet is one of the most common bet multiple, it consists of two selections in one bet with odds combined to give a punter a high potential winning. For this bet to win, both your selections have to win.

Cash out

A cash out, which is also known as buy out, is a feature offered by playTSOGO that allows punter the ability to settle their bets – by accepting a less payout than the potential win. Sometimes, this will have less than the stake to save you from a big loss.

Dead heat

This is a situation where two or more participants in a race are exactly level. 

Draw

When the contest ends with no winner or loser.

Draw No Bet

This type of market is usually used in soccer. It works by removing the draw option, if the game ends in a draw your stake is refunded. Only a win from either team is taken into account. Of course, if your team wins, your bet is a winner and if it loses you’re out.

Exacta

Used in horse racing. Betting on which horses will finish 1st and 2nd.

Each-way

This option come into effect when you’re confident a team or participant will do well but you’re not confident enough to back it on an outright win. You can take the each-way option, meaning your selection can either win or place (coming in the top 3). If you put R100 on your selection, R50 is for the win and R50 is for the place. Should your fancy wins, you will get paid for both the win and place. If it places, you get paid for place only.

Even money

A bet which returns exactly what is staked.

Filly

A female horse aged four or younger.

Favourite

A favourite is a team, athlete or animal that is expected to win a particular match or event. For example, Manchester City would be the favourites to win against Norwich.

Full-Time Result (90 Minutes)

90 minutes betting, also known as three-way market is when you bet on a soccer outcome after normal time. This market excludes extra-time and penalties. Only the results at the end of 90 minutes are considered. Of course, stoppage time or referee added time is considered to be part of 90 minutes.

Longshot

A selection with big odds, this is usually a horse or team that was given no chance by the bookmaker.

Maiden

A horse that has never won a race.

Non-runner

A horse that will no longer participate in the race.

Payout

The return on a winning bet.

Place bet  

Unlike a win bet, the place bet has three options to be a successful bet – your runner can finish first, second or third.

Punter

A person placing the bet with the bookmaker.

Stake

The money that a punter risks when placing a bet. For example, you take a soccer multiple for R100. That R100 is called the stake.

Tipster

A person who gives betting tips.

Trifecta

A type of bet on a horse race. A wager on which horses will finish 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

Underdog

A competitor perceived to be least likely to win.

BTTS

This means Both Team to Score, meaning both teams should score at least one goal for your bet to win.
