RUGBY: United Rugby Championship results and upcoming matches

United Rugby Championship

This past weekend saw 6 matches in week 6 out of 18 of the URC taking place. Only two out of the four South African teams played their matches with the Sharks and Lions matches being postponed due to illness and will be rescheduled to a future date.

The first match of the South African teams’ weekend’s matches saw the Bulls take on Benetton at their home ground at Stadio Comunale Monigo in Italy on Friday evening. Benetton took the lead early in the first half with penalty kicks but the Bulls came back from behind scoring two tries to put them in the lead going into half time.

The second half was tense but Jake White’s team kept composure to push the lead and win the game 44-22 after the final whistle. The win against the Italian team moved the Bulls into the third spot on the log with 19 points. The Bulls are now back in Mzansi and will have a home ground advantage when they take on the Sharks at Loftus this coming Sunday.

The match on Saturday evening was the last match of the Stormers tour in the Nothern hemisphere and they were up against Cardiff at Arms Park in Wales. The Stormers went into the match having an unbeaten run in the championship. Having won one and drawn one of their previous matches on tour.

Playing against Cardiff was always going to be tough with the rainy conditions suiting the Welsh team. It was a tense match which ultimately went the way of Cardiff who won the match with 6 points, the final score being 30-24. The Stormers picked up log points despite their loss having scored four tries in the game putting them behind the Bulls on the fourth spot on the log. Rugby fans can look forward to more local rugby this weekend as the Stormers travels to Ellis Park for a match against the Lions on Saturday, kick-off takes place at 16:00.

Leinster is the current leader on the log, having an unbeaten run of 6 out of 6 this season. They top the log with 28 points with a 7-point lead over second spot Ulster with 21 points. The Bulls are third and Stormers fourth both sitting with on 19 points on the log.

Edinburgh is sitting on fifth spot ahead of Cardiff who moved up a few spots after their win this weekend on sixth. The Sharks are seventh and Lions are eight each with 15 points despite their matches of the weekend being postponed.
