The Cricket World Cup 2022

The wait is over for cricket fans as the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup hosted by Australia finally starts this Saturday. The Super 12 comprises of eight teams that automatically qualified for the World Cup and four teams that finished at the top of the group stage matches which takes place a week before the official World Cup.

The qualification of countries for the group stage matches were decided on two bases, the first was based on the performance in the 2021 tournament and rankings taken from the 15th of November 2021 where West Indies, Namibia, Scotland and Sri Lanka qualified. The second was through the global qualifiers where Zimbabwe, Netherlands, UAE and Ireland progressed.
The countries that qualified were split into two groups of four teams for the group stage matches with Group A consisting of the Netherlands, Namibia, Sri Lanka and United Arab Emirates and Group B consisting of Scotland, West Indies, Ireland and Zimbabwe.

The T20 World Cup group stage opened with a bang on the 16th with the first of two matches in Group A taking place on the same day at Kardinia Park in Victoria.

The opening match was between Namibia and Sri Lanka. Namibian supporters couldn’t have asked for a better start for their national team’s quest to reach the Super 12 and the match couldn’t have gone more wrong for Sri Lanka. The toss was won by Sri Lanka who opted to bowl which sent Namibia to the crease to bat first.

Namibia gave an impressive inning and scored a total of 163/7, their best batting performance came from Jan Frylinck who scored 44 runs off of 28 balls. Sri Lanka looked uneasy at the crease and it wasn’t long before they lost their first wicket and struggled to find their rhythm after that.

David Wiese was Namibia’s best bowler on the day and got 2 wickets for 16 runs with an economy rate of 4.00, Frylinck also came into the fray and got 2 wickets for 26 runs which made earned him player of the match. Namibia won the match with 55 runs.

The second match in Group A of the T20 World Cup group stage saw the Netherlands take on the UAE later in the day at Kardinia Park.

UAE won the toss and decided the crease looks good to bat first; they scored a Nelson (111/8) after facing 20 overs. The UAE’s best batting innings came from Muhammad Waseem who had a good run rate of 87.23, scoring 41 runs from 47 balls and hitting 2 sixes.

Bas de Leede gave the Netherlands the break they needed by bowling a superb 3 wickets for 19 runs. It was an all-round good performance from the Dutch at the crease with Max O’Dowd getting the best on the day getting 23 runs from 18 balls, and hitting 3 fours.

The Netherlands won the match with 3 wickets to spare. Bas de Leede was awarded player of the match showing great skill in front of the wicket and providing good bowling for his team when needed.

The second match day of the qualifiers took place at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart and saw countries from Group B compete. The first of these two matches of the day saw another upset as Scotland took on the West Indies.

West Indies won the toss and decided to send in the Scots to the crease. George Munsey scored a great 66 runs from 53 not out with 9 fours which bagged him the player of the match. Scotland finished not out with a score of 160/5. Jason Holder was the best bowler in the Windies side getting 2 wickets for 14 runs after bowling 3 overs.

Jason Holder was also the best batsman for the Windies but got caught out by Chris Greaves having scored 38 from 33 balls with a strike rate of 115. The batting order of the Windies fell in the 18th over with a score of 118 giving Scotland the win with 42 runs.

Match two of the second-day qualifiers was between Zimbabwe and Ireland and took place at the Bellerive Oval. Ireland won the toss and elected to bowl. It was a rocky start for Zimbabwe who lost an early wicket in the first over.

Wesley Madhevere steadied the boat before Player of the Match Sikandar Raza put on a phenomenal score of 82 from 48 balls which helped Zimbabwe sail to get 174/7. Joshua Little was the best bowler in the Irish team, getting 3 wickets for 24 runs. Ireland also struggled to get off the bat and lost an early wicket and couldn’t get going after that.

Their best batting performance came from the middle order with Curtis Campher scoring 27 from 22 balls. Blessing Muzarabani played a big part in helping the collapse of the Irish batting order, taking 3 wickets for 23 runs. The Chevrons won the match by 31 runs.

The third match day of the group stage took place at Kardinia Park which saw Namibia and the Netherlands who won their first matches up against each other. The Africans won the toss and decided that the pitch looks good to rack up a good score for the Dutch to chase.

Namibia put up a score of 121/6 despite losing an early wicket with Jan Frylinck putting up the best score in Namibia’s batting order by getting 43 from 48 balls. Bas de Leede once again came to the fore and produced some good bowling to take 2 wickets for 18 runs.

The Dutch didn’t lose a wicket until the 8th over and cruised to victory and finished the match with a few balls left. Bas de Leede finished not out on 30 giving him his second man of the match for the tournament.

Sri Lanka needed a win in their second encounter in the group stage matches after losing their first against Namibia. They were up against the UAE in the second match of the third day of play at Kardinia Park.

UAE won the toss and sent Sri Lanka in to bat first. Opening batsman and player of the match Pathum Nissanka put up the highest score in the match of 74 runs from 60 balls to help Sri Lanka achieve a score of 152/8.

The best bowling from the UAE bowling squad came from Palaniapan Meiyappan who got the first hat trick of the tournament. Sri Lanka applied pressure early on to the UAE team getting a wicket in the second over and their batting order crumbled from there with no player scoring over 20 points and losing the match after being bowled out for 79 runs.

Matchday four took place at the Bellerive Oval and saw the highest score of the tournament so far. The first match of the day was between Scotland and Ireland. Ireland needed a win to have a chance of advancing to the Super 12 after their defeat at the hands of Zimbabwe a few days earlier.

The coin toss fell right for Scotland who then decided to face the Irish bowling attack. They recovered well after losing a wicket in the second over and went on to put up a decent score of 176/5.

Michael Jones put up a magnificent score of 86 from 55 balls for the Scottish Saltires and Curtis Campher was the best at bowling getting 2 wickets for 9 runs. The Irish came back with a fight after losing a few initial wickets thanks to Man of the Match Curtis Campher who was not out with 72 runs from 36 balls hitting 7 fours and 2 sixes.

The second game of match day four saw the Windies who lost their first matchup against Scotland take on Zimbabwe. A loss against the Chevrons would take them out of contention for making it through to the Super 12.

The Windies won the toss and went to the crease to bat first and put up a score of 153/7 for Zimbabwe to chase. Johnson Charles scored 45 from 36 balls and the best bowling came from Sikandar Raza who got 3 wickets for 19 runs.

The West Indies bowling attack especially from Man of the Match Alzarri Joseph was too strong for Zimbabwe in the end and not batsman got past 30 runs. Alzarri got 4 wickets and only gave away 16 runs and at the end Zimbabwe were all out for 122.

Matchday five at Kardinia Park was the crux day in Group A with all countries level except for the UAE who could already not qualify for the Super 12.

The First match for the day was between Sri Lanka the Netherlands. Sri Lanka went first to bat after winning the toss and put up a score of 162/6 thanks to the delightful innings of Kusal Mendis (player of the match) who scored 79 runs from 44 balls, hitting 5 fours and 5 sixes.

It wasn’t a particularly good bowling day for the Dutch with the best bowling coming from Paul van Meekeren who took 2 wickets and gave away 25 runs.

The Netherlands put up a fight with opening batsman Max O’Dowd not out at end of play with a score of 71 from 53 balls hitting 6 fours and 3 sixes. Wanindu Hasaranga got 3 wickets for 28 denying a win for the Dutch, winning the game with 16 runs. This win earned Sri Lanka the top spot on Group A and also a spot in the Super 12.

The second match in the last of the Group A matches was between UAE and Namibia. Namibia needed a win to advance them to the Super 12 for the first time in the nation’s history and a win from the UAE would mean that the Netherlands would progress to the Super 12. UAE went in to bat first and putting up a score of 148 after 20 overs.

Muhammad Waseem scored 50 before getting caught by Ben Shikongo. The Namibians started slow off the bat and only really got alive in the last few overs. All the pressure was on David Wiese who scored 55 but was caught out when attempting a 6 on the 3rd last ball which gave UAE the win of 7 runs. The UAE win was also welcomed by the Dutch who has now secured their spot in the Super 12.
